Editor’s note

With so many pubs dropping like flies across London, it’s nice to write an edition about one that’s opening back up!

The August 2025 Edition

August in London is a strange one. Half the city clears out, the other half leans in. Quieter commutes, easier tables, and a welcome pause before autumn kicks back in. It can be easy to feel jaded, especially this year with how lucky we’ve been with the weather, leaving room for nostalgia of variety and autumn creeping in. This edition reflects that, a very picky curation of things to do for every mood this month.

Bad Boy Pizzeria | Bethnal Green | Opens 8 August

What started as a tongue-in-cheek student society has quietly become one of London’s most beloved pizza names, crowned the UK’s best pizza in 2022 and 2024. After years of residences across Vinegar Yard and Covent Garden, Bad Boy Pizza Society now has a permanent home in Bethnal Green - a relaxed, all-day spot with NYC-style slices by day and sit-down service by night. Expect smart pairings including lemon ricotta, truffle oil, vodka sauce and 50% off + free beer on opening weekend.

The Macbeth | Hoxton | Opens 13 August

The Macbeth is getting a new chapter - same pub, sharper palate. Jamie Allan (formerly of The Plimsoll) and Patrick Nolan are taking over with a menu shaped by Portuguese tascas: unfussy, flavour-led, and served late into the night. Expect dishes like snail rice and pork-and-cheese rolls alongside a proper pint, all under the gaze of a newly restored Victorian mural.

Berberé | Marylebone | Opens 4 August

Berberè open their fourth London pizzeria this August, taking over the old Homeslice site on James Street. Originally from Bologna, they’ve built a quiet reputation around slow-fermented sourdough and smart ingredient sourcing - think Yorkshire sausage with Napoli mozzarella, or truffled four cheese with mushrooms. There’s a terrace out front, a tight wine list from Passione Vino, and a tiramisu spiked with Bar Termini espresso. Inside, it seats 45 and feels easy-going but dialled in. A good option for early evenings or relaxed lunches near Marylebone High Street.
